What Does AHS

Traffic Accidents are Still Increasing - Why?

Established in 1996, the AHSRA received a commission from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT) to clarify the AHS concept and formulate AHS requirements. Next, AHS developed systems to embody that concept and implemented joint testing along with ASV (advanced safety vehicle). Parallel to these activities, the AHS clarified objectives necessary for ensuring safety and reliability of infrastructure, developed practical systems for their realization, and launched demonstration tests.
Since 2003 we have been conducting research that strives to put into practical use as early as possible our previous findings. In 2004, we began joint research between the government and the private sector into Smartway, a next-generation road services system, as well as working towards the practical use of a new Virtual Infrastructure Integration system.

phase1[1996-2002]
R&D that gave the highest priority to improving the safety of road transportation
[Primary accomplishments ]
*Services: Roads with uninterrupted traffic flow…..Potential to put into practical use
*Services: Intersections......Clarification of problems
*Elemental technology.......Development of road conditions sensors and road
surface sensors
*Led the world in proposing a Vehicle Infrastructure Integration AHS System,
and contributed to raising Japan’s status on the global stage.
*In FY2002 and FY2003 received a commission from the Ministry of Land,
Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT) and carried out tests on actual roads in
seven locations throughout Japan.
Phase2
Smartway Demonstration 2006
Smartway Demonstration 2006 was held from February 22 to 24 at the National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management (NILIM).The AHS Research Association provided cooperation in the demonstration of “Single-road Safety Services (provision of information about oncoming forward obstacles and provision of road surface information)” that use shared platforms (ITS on-board unit).

Smartway trial and demonstration
In FY2006, we have been pouring further efforts into a full-scale operation of AHS services (systems for providing information about oncoming forward obstacles, merge support systems, etc.) for the Smartway trial and demonstration scheduled for the Metropolitan Expressway.
