Test location:

Nakayama Pass, ordinary National Highway 230
On Otaru side in vicinity of kilometer point 46.4
Test period:

November 1999 - September 2001
Road management authority:

Otaru Development and Construction Department, Hokkaido Development Bureau
Road surface sensors:

Visible image sensor (1), laser radar (1), electric wave radiometer (1), optical fiber (500 m)
Reference instruments:

Meteorological station, visible image camera monitors (3)


Reasons for selection:

Natural environment: Located in extremely cold area with snow cover and with highly variable road surface conditions

Road structure: 2 lanes or more

Traffic volume: Approximately 10,000 vehicles/day, ordinary national highway with frequent snow and ice operations

Availability of installation locations for sensors and processing devices
