Like in many countries in the world, there are a number of problems to be solved concerning the road traffic system in Japan. Every year, approximately 10,000 people are killed and a million injured in traffic accidents. Compensation paid to victims of these traffic accidents costs as much as 30 billion dollars. The number of registered vehicles has reached 72 million, and annual economic loss due to traffic congestion is estimated at 89 billion dollars.
