Mission & approach of AHSRA

Invitation to participate in the Joint Tests

Arena discussions are held each day at the demo-site. They aim to address discussion points for different target groups, both experts and non-experts. Each discussion is based on a number of provoking statements regarding Automated Vehicle Guidance. Invited experts from different professional background will present their position at the start of the discussion. Next, both the experts and the audience are involved to discuss the different positions, with the aim of identifying issues that are agreed upon and issues about which there is difference of opinion. The audience is invited to take part in the discussion and can also express their views by an electronic voting system.
During DEMO ’98the following Arena discussions can be visisted:

Venue for 200 seating capacity was created in a pavilion next to the exhibition pavilion.
It provided information on various issues, changing the theme every day, as well as question-and-answer with the audience, and opinions of visitors gathered through questionnaires.

Presentation was held on June 16, the day following the opening of the official demo event (June 15) and the first day of the Arena Discussions. There were roughly 60 in the audience.
The PDC (Preview Distance Control; an ACC) with Diamante feature was presented, along with introduction of truck PDC and MDAS.

These following topics were presented at the same time.
1)AVG:a Govermental Point of View (Mr. P.Elsenaar MOT The Netherlands)
2)Presentation on Future Application of AVG (Mr. O.Hofmann TUV Germany)
3)ISA:Intelligent Speed Adaptation (Mr. J.Busstra MOT The Netherlands)
4)Development of Adaptive Cruise Control (PDC) (Mr. M.Ito MMC Japan)
5)Cauffeur - The European Way Towards an Automated Highway Syatem (Mr. M.Schulze DB Germany)

• Questions regarding the presentation: What are the concerns you may have regarding the automated systems involved?

• Answer: The system is designed to relieve the driver of the operation load. However, the driver holds driving responsibility even when the system is in operation. In order that the driver does not depend on the system, attention should be paid to HMI, etc. Research is also under way for system to monitor driver attention (such as MDAS).

Opinions of the audience were surveyed with each pressing buttons to respond to multiple-choice questions. The responses were tabulated and displayed on real-time basis

Popular choices were made regarding the three ITS services of ISA (automatic speed control in city areas for Intelligent Speed Adaptation), ACC (headway maintenance for Adaptive Cruise Control) and Plt (platooning):
