Advanced Cruise-Assist Highway System Research Association (AHSRA)

The Ministry of Construction and the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport) held the Joint Tests Demo 2000 from November 28 (Tuesday) through December 1 (Friday), 2000, at Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture.

Joint Tests Demo 2000 Venue

The open demonstration of the Cruise Assist Systems, realized through the coordinated use of the Advanced Cruise-Assist Highway System (AHS), which aims at promoting road safety through development of an IT-based road infrastructure, and the Advanced Safety Vehicle (ASV), which is aimed at promoting further progress in vehicle-safety technologies, ended in great success. The event was attended by a total of some 2,400 visitors and participants, including persons who participated in test rides at the Public Works Research Institute (PWRI) (now National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management) of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport and the Japan Automobile Research Institute (JARI), guests at the opening ceremony held at the PWRI, attendees at lectures and technical sessions held at the Tsukuba International Conference Hall, and some 200 participants from 18 foreign countries.
In a survey of visitors and participants at the event, more than 90% responded that they would like to actually use the system. In addition, many comments were received regarding the level of sophistication in vehicle technology, suggesting great interest among the respondents.

Test Course at PWRI

As reported in our 5th and 6th Reports, development of the Cruise Assist Systems is being furthered by the Advanced Cruise-Assist Highway System Research Association (AHSRA), which is comprised of 21 private businesses, and by 13 automobile manufacturers that are promoting the development of ASV. AHSRA and ASV member companies conducted joint proving tests on seven user services on the test course at the PWRI in Tsukuba City in October 2000 in order to evaluate and examine system viability and driver tolerance.
Auto makers and research organizations in Asian, European and American regions also participated in the proving tests. The Joint Tests Demo 2000 was organized as a demonstration open to the public to allow people to learn about the results of the tests and of the achievements of past research relating to ASV and AHS.
